Batman's bond with Nightwing looks to be strained at best in this universe. That approach makes sense, given that that one such relationship looks to be one of the biggest points of divergence between Gotham Knights and the traditional DC Universe. Gilded City is less about filling in major story gaps than helping to establish this version of Gotham City and the relationships between Batman and his sidekicks. Narcisse stresses to IGN that the comic is "linked more thematically than causally" to the game. But his goal here is ultimately to tell a story that stands on its own two legs. Narcisse is familiar with the plot of the game, having worked as a narrative consultant for Gotham Knights and other superhero games like Marvel's Spider-Man and Marvel's Avengers. Gilded City is a direct prequel to the game, one set before Batman and Gordon's deaths. In the aftermath of that twin tragedy, Nightwing, Batgirl Red Hood and Robin will have to team up to restore order to Gotham and unravel a massive conspiracy involving the Court of Owls.
The game kicks off after the sudden deaths of Batman and Commissioner Gordon. It might not be safe to bet on it due to how dark of a character The Batman Who Laughs is, but it would be an interesting addition. While the plot of the Gotham Knights game is being kept under wraps leading up to release, we do know some important details. The Batman Who Laughs just so happens to be one of the most interesting ways that WB Montreal could take the game, and all of the puzzle pieces are in place for that to happen right now. However, there are a number of theories that seem like they could end up being correct. The Joker toxin has played a pretty big role in past Batman games, and while Gotham Knights isn't a sequel, it could be something that gets reintroduced in the game.įans aren't going to get any real answers for a while, as the game isn't slated to come out until next year at the earliest. He's the most likely figure behind Bruce Wayne's "death," and that sort of proximity does make an appearance from The Batman Who Laughs seem a bit more likely. It could be that the developers are just trying to throw players off of the scent of the plot, as it seems likely that The Joker will appear in some capacity. As such, there are likely lots of casual fans that wouldn't know about The Batman Who Laughs, which is a great opportunity to introduce some extra horror into the game. First appearing in 2017, DC hasn't had many opportunities to include the character in anything outside of comics, though he did sort of appearing as a Mortal Kombat 11 skin for Noob Saibot alongside the Joker DLC release. Not to mention, the villain hasn't had much of a presence in video games, partly due to how recently he was created. Plus, The Batman Who Laughs is one of the most wicked-looking villains that DC has created, which is icing on the cake. That presents a surprisingly interesting plot point, though, as Gotham Knights could essentially focus on taking down a corrupt form of Batman that the group of heroes is completely unequipped to handle. All of that makes The Batman Who Laughs a formidable threat against the heroes featured in Gotham Knights, as they're (partly) the ones that are murdered by him in the comics.
